Talc Masterbatch
Talc powder masterbatch is a type of plastic-modified filler made primarily from talc powder, which is processed into granules by mixing with carrier resins or polymers along with relevant modifying agents. It appears as grayish-white cylindrical particles with a uniform color. By enhancing the processing performance and dispersibility of talc powder, this material is widely used in resin systems such as PP, ABS, and PS, effectively boosting the rigidity, high-temperature creep resistance, and heat resistance of filled materials. Manufactured using specialized techniques, it exhibits excellent dispersibility and uniformity when added to plastics. ABS resin, an amorphous polymer, shares the outstanding molding and processing characteristics of polystyrene. It boasts superior impact resistance, excellent low-temperature performance, high tensile strength, and remarkable creep resistance—capable of maintaining its dimensions under a load of 7 MPa without deformation. As a result, ABS is extensively employed in injection molding processes for producing housings of various electronic devices, including instruments, televisions, cassette recorders, and mobile phones. Beyond these applications, ABS also finds broad use in other industries, such as textile machinery, electrical components, automotive parts, and aircraft components. However, current performance levels of ABS are still not fully satisfactory, prompting extensive research into ABS modification. A significant amount of literature has already been published on this topic. For instance, ABS-PVC blends are commonly used to produce automotive dashboard thermoformed sheets and imitation leather coverings for luggage and bags. These blends not only deliver exceptional strength and toughness but also ensure long-lasting durability of surface patterns. Moreover, when these blended materials are further reinforced with ultrafine calcium carbonate or ultrafine talc powder, their notched impact strength and tear resistance can be significantly enhanced. For example, adding 5% to 15% ultrafine calcium carbonate can boost the notched impact strength of the blend by 2 to 4 times. As an amorphous polymer, ABS has the unique ability to accommodate a relatively high proportion of fillers. Incorporating ultrafine talc powder masterbatch into ABS formulations not only markedly improves the material’s inherent properties but also helps reduce production costs.
