Optimizing coating performance:
Enhancing mechanical properties: Flake-shaped talc powder can align parallel within the coating, increasing the density of the paint film and improving tensile strength, flexural modulus, and other key attributes. For instance, adding talc powder to anti-corrosion coatings for steel structures can effectively lengthen the penetration path of corrosive media, thereby boosting the protective performance. At the same time, it also helps improve the sedimentation stability of the coating, ensuring longer shelf life and greater product stability during storage.
Improve construction performance: Fibrous talc powder can regulate the rheology of coatings, preventing sedimentation during storage and sagging during application, thus ensuring smoother construction. For instance, in thick-paste coatings, it plays a critical role in resisting sagging, helping to maintain uniform coating thickness.
Adjusting optical performance: Coarser-particle talc powder is used in products requiring a rougher paint film, such as the intermediate layer of interior wall primers, helping to achieve a distinctive texture. On the other hand, ultra-fine-grade talc powder can effectively control the gloss and consistency of semi-gloss magnetic paints, while also leveraging its ability to create spatial separation—allowing it to partially replace expensive pigments like TiO₂ without compromising optical effects, thus helping to manage costs.
Adapts to different coating types:
Water-based coatings: Talc powder has a soft texture and excellent dispersibility. When added, it enhances the surface drying ability and corrosion resistance of the coating. However, it’s important to carefully control the amount added to avoid compromising the coating’s light transmission and adhesion properties. For instance, incorporating an appropriate amount of talc powder into water-based wood finishes can improve the film’s tactile feel and abrasion resistance.
Solvent-based coatings: As a commonly used filler, talcum powder enhances the coating's opacity, imparts excellent brushability to the film, and ensures good flow and smoothness. It is widely applied in primers and intermediate coats, significantly improving adhesion between layers as well as recoatability.
Special-function coatings: In fire-retardant coatings, talc powder's fire resistance can help enhance the fire protection rating; in waterproof coatings, it strengthens the coating's water-repellent and anti-seepage properties, reducing moisture-induced erosion of the coated object.
